Roberta Murray approaches photography much the same as the Pictorialist photographers of the late 19th century to tell a more personal, interpretative story based more on her dreams and imagination than reality. Murray combines traditional techniques, historical ideas and contemporary tools, using the camera more as a paintbrush than a mechanical device in creating her images. After studying photography in the late 1980’s, Roberta abandoned the medium and spent 14 years working in the fibre arts. It is this work which lead her back to photography using textile theories of colour, texture, and depth to create evocative representations of abstract idea’s or moods. In 2009, She was juried into the prestigious Alberta Society of Artist’s. Her work hangs in public and private collections around the world.
